One to Watch, by Kate Stayman-London
Goodreads has been 2 for 2 so far! I am loving these highlighted treasures, this one being a finalist in the romantic comedy genre.
The premise of One to Watch is a plus-size blogger first shames, and then is invited to star in, one of her favorite shows, Main Squeeze: a fictional take on the reality show, The Bachelorette.
First off, as a guilty-pleasure sucker for this show in real life, it spoke my language. And then when I found out it was about a woman like me breaking body image barriers on the show, something I have always wished I could do, I was hooked. It was sure to be a combination that tantalized my imagination while relating to my world at the same time.
Every. Damn. Feel.
Literally, I could be Bea Shumacher, the main character. I cried, angered and triumphed throughout the whole book as I related to her weight struggle, her heartbreak, her poor love life decisions, her very off-base beliefs about herself, her fears, her strength, her courage, her humor, her hopes….everything…as she embarked on a Bachelorette-like journey to find love and break societal barriers against plus-sized women.
It wasn’t campy like the show itself, but brilliantly played out to see the (potential?) inner-workings of a show like that, with some intentional footage and scripting, but also the reactions of the media intertwined within the story itself. You felt the pulls of the heart, the desire to slap some of these asses, the betrayals, the support—all of it as you went on this rollercoaster ride with Bea.
Bea’s now inspired me to break my own ceiling of limitations, which is truly the markings of a piece of art.
Fantastically fun, deep—and did I mention all the feels? Story and character fabulousness at its best.
